What is the Cheapest Option for UK Imports?

If you're shipping from Europe into the UK, then Economy services like "DHL Standard" or "FedEx Economy" will see a portion of the transportation taken by road.  As road transportation costs less than running aircraft, this is usually reflected in the price and will provide the cheapest shipping option.

If you are importing from an international destination outside of Europe, there will usually be a requirement for goods to travel via air transportation.  If you're goods are under 100kgs, then we recommend using our instant quote tool.  If your goods are over 100kgs, then get in touch to discuss an air freight quote.

Important UK Customs Information

The UK is subject to international import regulations alongside its own laws defined by HM Revenue & Customs. As the recipient of the goods you may be liable to pay VAT, customs duty or excise duty fees depending on the parcel’s place of origin and its contents. Thankfully, ParcelBroker can handle most of the work for you.

Prohibited items - include items that are commonly illegal internationally, in addition to items specifically controlled by the UK’s border forces. Couriers also have their own lists of prohibited and restricted items, too – so be sure to confirm these before shipping.

Restricted items - will only be admitted into the UK when legal restrictions are correctly followed. This means your package may be seized due to an error on the paperwork, or to missing documents.

Here are some examples of items that are prohibited and restricted for import into the UK. You can find the Universal Postal Union’s full list of prohibited and restricted items, here.

Commonly Restricted items

  • Aerosols
  • Alcoholic beverages below 70% ABV
  • Batteries
  • Christmas Crackers
  • Electronic items
  • Food items
  • Lighters
  • Paints
  • Perfumes
  • Seeds and plants

Commonly Prohibited items

  • Alcoholic Beverages above 70%
  • Combustible Gases
  • Explosive materials
  • Firearms
  • Flammable materials
  • Meat products from a prohibition area
  • Narcotics

UK Import Checklist

Follow this checklist to ensure your import abides by all relevant rules and regulations.

  • Check what import duty is owed and pay it within 14 days of arrival. If you don’t pay these fees, your pallets may be returned to the sender, or destroyed.
  • How much is your gift worth? Gifts worth £36 or less are excluded from the rules on duty and VAT. There are no extra charges associated with shipments within this category.
  • Remember that certain goods automatically qualify for Inward Processing Relief (IPR) or Duty relief. In these circumstances you may be able to avoid paying any charges at all. You can find more information on IPR, VAT and Duty on the HMRC website.
  • Check your pallet is labelled correctly before shipping. You’ll need the proper customs label displaying the contents of your pallet. Make sure you write recipient details clearly and correctly. You should also provide your details as a return address in case something goes wrong and the pallet needs to be returned to the sender.

How Much Does UK Import Duty Cost?

UK import duty commonly falls under either VAT, Customs Duty or Excise Duty. All of which depend on the value of the pallet being received. For goods with a value of less than £135, no import duty is charged. For goods worth between £135 and £630, a fee of 2.5% will be charged. Anything above £630 will be charged according to its corresponding HS code.
